What Is Franchise Cost Calc?

Franchise Cost Calc is a free collection of franchise cost calculators built to help you estimate how much it costs to open a franchise. Whether you are researching fast food chains, fitness studios, or service-based brands, our calculators give you realistic investment ranges based on actual Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) data so you can plan with confidence.

Every calculator is completely free to use. No account required, no email signup, no hidden fees. Just pick a franchise, enter your details, and get an instant cost estimate.

How Our Calculators Work

Each calculator asks you a few questions about your situation - things like location type (inline, endcap, freestanding) and market size. Based on your inputs, the calculator generates three estimates:

Our estimates are pulled from the Item 7 table in each franchise brand's FDD, which breaks down every category of initial investment. We regularly review and update our cost models as new FDDs are released.

Where Our Data Comes From

We source our franchise cost data from several places:

Our Editorial Process

Every franchise cost page on this site follows the same research and review process:

  1. FDD research. We locate the most recent Franchise Disclosure Document for each brand through state regulator databases (primarily the California DFPI), franchise broker databases, and direct franchisor filings.
  2. Item 7 extraction. We pull the estimated initial investment range, franchise fee, and ongoing fee structure directly from the FDD's Item 7 table.
  3. Cross-reference. We verify key figures against the brand's franchise opportunity page, Entrepreneur's Franchise 500 database, and industry publications.
  4. Calculator calibration. We build each page's cost calculator using the FDD investment range as the baseline, with adjustment multipliers for location type and market size based on regional cost-of-living data.
  5. Annual review. We review and update cost data as new FDDs are published, typically on an annual cycle aligned with each brand's fiscal year.

How We Handle Non-Franchise Brands

Some of the most-searched franchise cost queries are for brands that do not actually franchise (Chipotle, In-N-Out, Panda Express, Starbucks, Texas Roadhouse). We include these brands because the search intent is real and the answer is useful, but we clearly label them as company-owned and source their cost data from SEC filings, annual reports, and investor presentations rather than FDDs.

Update Policy

Franchise cost data changes as brands update their FDDs, adjust fee structures, or modify territory requirements. We aim to review each page at least once per year against the most recent available FDD. The "Last reviewed" date on each page and in our methodology block indicates when we last verified the cost data against available sources.

If you notice outdated information on any page, please let us know at hello@franchisecostcalc.com and we will prioritize a review.

Important Disclaimer

The estimates provided by Franchise Cost Calc are based on FDD filings and publicly available data. They are intended for informational and planning purposes only. Actual costs vary significantly based on your location, real estate market, buildout conditions, timing, and the specific franchise agreement you negotiate.

Always review the current FDD directly from the franchisor before making any investment decision. Our calculators are a starting point for research - not a substitute for professional financial, legal, or franchise advisory services.
